AOA HIKING ADVENTURES FOR 2010

 

Join us as we visit some of the most scenic and biologically rich landscapes in the Appalachian region. These walks are leisurely with a lot of attention on the local geology, flora and fauna.

Trimble Township Community Forest

This 1200-acre AOA property is located near the small town of Glouster in Athens County. The completely wooded land was formerly owned by the Sunday Creek Coal Company and consists of wooded hills and valleys, small streams, ponds and shallow wetlands.

Directions: Take SR 78 east out of Nelsonville to Glouster. We will meet at the Sunday Creek Watershed Office next to Sam's Gym in downtown Glouster.

 

Bison Hollow/Brunken Properties

This walk will traverse the privately owned Brunken property in addition to the adjacent AOA owned Bison Hollow. This land, located near Ash Cave, is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Hocking Hills – a rambling stream, sandstone cliffs, spectacular waterfalls, lush woodland and abundant spring wildflowers.

Directions: Going east on SR 56 just before Ash Cave, turn right onto Amerine Road (just before bridge). Follow Amerine for ˝ mile and go left on gravel road over a small wooden bridge. (Don’t continue on paved Amerine Road)

 

Cohen Property

This 90-acre private retreat is owned by Alan Cohen and Evie Adelman. Over the past 30 years Alan has introduced numerous native and exotic plants to create a fascinating botanical museum. The special attraction on this day will be the tall grass prairie, which should be in all its splendor with blooming wildflowers and tall grasses.

Directions: Located at 26488 Starr Route Road, Logan

 

Camp Oty’Okwa

Camp Oty’Okwa is a 600-acre facility owned and operated by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of central Ohio. Here one will find some of Hocking County’s most primitive beauty with forested hills and valleys, high cliffs and recess caves, clear flowing streams and abundant wildlife.

Directions: Camp entrance is at junction of SR 664 and Purcell Road. Follow the signs.
