Appalachia Ohio Alliance invites the public to visit the new 95-acre Bartley Preserve in Circleville. This “open house” style event features many interesting displays as well as the official dedication of the site in honor of Floyd Bartley, a Pickaway County farmer and widely respected naturalist, who collected rare botanical specimens from the preserve property and region.

Take advantage of this first opportunity to visit and learn about AOA’s newest preserve. Hear restoration and development plans that include a public trail, site visitation and interpretive amenities to benefit the Pickaway County community.

Event activities and interpretive stations will be centered on the shady lawn of the beautiful, historic home of our generous hosts, Rich and Sandy Elsea (1711 Hitler Road No. 1, Circleville – see link location on map below). Feel free to bring a blanket or comfortable lawn chairs and relax in the summertime shade on the grounds of the historic George Hitler house.

A highlight of the open house will be fascinating interpretive stations manned by representatives of a variety of collaborative organizations who will provide information and insights related to the natural, historical and archaeological features of the property. Visitors will be encouraged to interact with presenters and discuss the various characteristics and heritage of the preserve and Pickaway County that converge in this one area.

Featured interpretive subjects include: archaeology and native heritage associated with the Adena mound, Floyd Bartley biographical sketch and accomplishments, glacial-influenced geology and geography, natural history, biological significance, Burr-Oak savannah restoration plans, habitat conservation, Scioto River flyway corridor, Hitler family heritage, List family farm heritage, and farmland preservation.

We are grateful to our partner organizations for helping prepare and present site information, including: Pickaway County Archaeological Group, Floyd Bartley Herbarium of Ohio University, ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, the List family, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Pickaway County Park Board, Pickaway County Historical Society, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.
