The Appalachia Ohio Alliance (AOA) is sponsoring a canoe trip on scenic Big Darby Creek on Sunday, July 17th. This trip is a fundraising event for AOA. Trip proceeds will be donated to the Alliance to help support riparian corridor protection along Big Darby Creek. We are very grateful to the Raccoon Creek Partnership/Water Trail Association, Trapper John’s Canoe Livery and the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program for donating canoes to be used for this event and for their support of AOA’s river conservation mission.

Float a section of beautiful Big Darby Creek, a national and state designated scenic river. We will put in on AOA’s Cline Preserve near Darbyville and take out at our new Steward Preserve, about 5 miles downstream. We will have an opportunity to view these properties that have been protected by AOA to help safeguard our water quality, native habitat and scenic assets. Enjoy views of the Big Darby valley and learn about river characteristics and conditions.

Canoes, paddles and life jackets are included in the trip fee of $25 per person. Participants who want to use their own canoe or kayak are welcome. Single and inexperienced paddlers are welcome and will be paired with a partner based on experience. We will try to place at least one person with sufficient paddling experience in each canoe to navigate the natural meanders of the river environment.

This trip will be held rain or shine so please dress appropriately for the weather. We will postpone the trip only in the event of severe weather or river conditions. Call AOA (740.817.1759) on Sunday morning if you need to check on conditions or the trip status. We will rendezvous at the take out point on the Steward Preserve and carpool upriver to the put in location.

This trip is open to the public. Spend a fun summer day on the river while helping to support AOA’s watershed conservation and education efforts!

Time: Please be at the Steward Preserve ready to depart by 9:00 a.m. We expect the trip to last approximately 4 – 5 hours.

What to Bring: Bring your own drink, picnic lunch, sunscreen, bug repellant (if needed), hat, and water shoes or old sneakers.

Place: Participants should meet in the gravel parking area on the Steward farm along London Road south of Darbyville in Pickaway County. The address for the driveway is 19644 London Rd, Circleville, OH 43113 – use Google map link below.
