When:
June 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am

Join AOA and representatives of the Columbus Audubon Society for a family-friendly workshop on cavity-nesting birds. This unique event will provide an opportunity to see inside active Bluebird nest boxes and view young birds up close!

Thinking about putting up some nest boxes for birds in your yard, but not sure where to start? Or do you already have boxes installed, but nobody’s moved in?
Cavity-nesting bird expert Darlene Sillick will help answer your birding and nesting questions. We’ll look inside active nesting boxes and learn about bird boxes, bird banding and wild bird habitat for the species in our area. Learn to tell how old a nestling is, how to band birds, and why scientists use leg bands to study bird populations.

We will discuss the species of native birds that may readily use nest boxes on your property and share information on good box design features, box placement, installation tips and basic monitoring recommendations. We will also explore the Conservation Demonstration Site area to learn about the type of habitat that will attract various nesting species.

Families are particularly encouraged to attend this event. Volunteer photographers will help you take instant print photo images for you to remember your experiences during the day. Please bring the kids and instill stewardship values. Dress appropriately for the summer weather and walking on mown prairie grasses.

Time: Meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8
Place: AOA’s Demonstration Site is located on Rockbridge Road A right off Highway 33 in Rockbridge – see Google map link below. Park in the gravel parking area or along the roadway.
What to Bring: A love of birds and nature.
