Join AOA and representatives of the Columbus Audubon Society for a workshop on cavity-nesting birds. Look inside active nesting boxes and learn about bird boxes, bird banding and wild bird habitat for the species in our area.
Thinking about putting up some nest boxes for birds in your yard, but not sure where to start?
Or do you already have boxes installed, but nobody’s moved in?
Cavity-nesting bird expert Darlene Sillick will help answer your birding and nesting questions.
This unique event will provide an opportunity to see inside active nest boxes and view young birds up close! We’ll learn to tell how old a nestling is, how to band birds, and why scientists use leg bands to study bird populations.
We will discuss the species of native birds that may readily use nest boxes on your property and share information on good box design features, box placement, installation tips and basic monitoring recommendations. We will also explore the Conservation Demonstration Site area to learn about the type of habitat that will attract various nesting species.
This is a family-friendly event. Please feel free to bring the kids and instill stewardship values. Dress appropriately for the summer weather and walking on mown prairie grasses.
Time: Meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11
Place: AOA Demonstration Site located next to Mathias Grove at 25797 Bailey Road, Rockbridge – see Google map link below. Park in the gravel parking area on Bailey Road or alongside the roadway.
What to Bring: A love of birds and nature.
