Tree planting season is upon us now that the ground is warming. AOA is partnering with ODNR Division of Forestry to plant Chestnut seedlings at two of our preserves. We will plant trees at the Hintz Hollow Preserve in the Hocking River valley in the morning and at Fickardt Farm Preserve along Big Darby Creek in the afternoon.
Join us at either or both locations. ODNR will supply the chestnut trees and tubes. AOA will provide gloves and tools. While AOA has planted several American Chestnut trees at scattered locations in recent years this will be our largest effort to establish a sizeable grove in former fields that we are reforesting.
Native to the eastern half of Ohio prior to the blight, reestablishing the iconic American Chestnut trees in AOA’s many forested preserves in its original range is a worthy goal that is becoming more realistic thanks to improved hybrids becoming available.
Time: 10:00 a.m. at Hintz Hollow. 2:00 p.m. at Fickardt Farm.
What to Bring: Feel free to bring snacks, lunch and/or drinks of your choice.
