Visit another one of AOA’s new preserves in the Hocking Hills – the 28-acre old Hocking Canal Lock No. 11 and canal corridor and wetland area. Located in the northern portion of Hocking County, the site is also located adjacent to the Hocking River and is part of AOA’s Hocking River Conservation Corridor and Hocking Canal Heritage Corridor Initiatives.

There are a lot of interesting natural features packed into this modest-sized preserve. In addition to the old Hocking Canal corridor and lock, the site includes a variety of diverse habitats – bottomland forest, forested and prairie wetlands, and areas of mature upland forests on steep hillsides facing the old canal corridor and river. Scenic outcrops of Blackhand Sandstone define the edges of one of the hills.

Take this opportunity to visit Lock No. 11 which is located in a deep woods and was only recently preserved and made available for visitation. We will hike around the property, viewing the many natural and historic wonders. Afterwards, some of us will hike further along the canal corridor which is leased by AOA from ODNR.

The Hocking Canal hike and other AOA events are free and open to the public. This event will be held rain or shine – so please come prepared and dress appropriately for the weather and hiking on slopes. This is an outdoor event that will be conducted in conformance with applicable Covid-19 recommendations for social distancing.

Time: Meet at 10:00 a.m. We encourage participants to arrive early to provide plenty of time to park.

What to Bring: Lunch, snacks, and/or drinks of your choice. We will take a break to eat in the shady forested hillside below the rock outcrops. Insect repellant recommended.

Location: AOA’s Hocking Canal Lock No. 11 Preserve is located on Buckeye Troxel Road just down the road from Mercer Woods Old Growth Forest Preserve. The Preserve has no roadway frontage.
