Outdoor Skills for Kids
![]()
Here’s an opportunity to get your kids out to have fun in the woods in the Hocking Hills. Spend a beautiful fall afternoon in the spectacular forest on AOA’s Menchhofer Preserve learning some fun outdoor skills that your young ones will surely be talking about with their friends.
While taking a short hike through the colorful forest, we will practice fire and shelter making. We’ll also learn how to use compasses, maps and phone apps for orienteering purposes. No previous skills or experience is required, just a curiosity to learn something new and different that will be useful for future outdoors enjoyment.
We will look for wildlife and should expect to see many of the birds that use the mature forest habitats. This activity is appropriate for 6-12-year-olds.
AOA’s Menchhofer Preserve is part of AOA’s Queer Creek Conservation Corridor and Hocking Hills Conservation Initiative which seeks to conserve water quality, native habitats, natural and geologic features, scenic landscapes, and heritage sites in this special Ohio region. AOA has conserved over 110 properties and 7,000 acres in the Hocking Hills so far.
This as well as other AOA events are free and open to the public. We will meet rain or shine – so please come prepared and dress appropriately for the weather and for being in the woods.
Time: Meet at 1:00 p.m. This event will last for approximately 2 hours.
